Posting Times for CR4

04/14/2008 1:41 PM

I am baffled by the following situation that I encounter when entering into the CR4 forum. As I am retired, I often spend many hours during the day and evenings at the computer, I make it a point to keep a close watch on when the CR4 posting is made to may email account which is located on hotmail.com. On all occasions when I have accessed the forum posting (even when almost directly after it appeared), I find that there have been many responses posted to to the questions.

As previous threads have indicated that the forum is posted virtually simultaneously worldwide, I am surprised that my forum posting shows up late (often significantly later) than the noted posting times from other participants.

Just trying to make sense of the situation. Is this something with hotmail, or have others encountered the same situation?

I don't know if this is any help, but I have to constantly hit the "refresh" button to stay current.

Also...just as a gee whiz FYI... you can hit F5 to refresh...if the fingers are closer to the keyboard than the mouse.

I have found the easiest way for me to keep current is to leave it on the subscribed page. When I check it I hit the home button and then if I see updates I go back to the subscribed page. My refresh seems to take longer. I guess thats just my computer.

Did you know these things have personalities? I read that it depends on the way the motherboard is laid out. Each piece has an electromagnetic field that interacts with those around it. Just moving one a little this way or that can change the personality of the machine. Since no two machines are perfectly identical slight variations can occur in thier operation. It made sense to me when I read it.

It does seem strange to me that CR4 doesn't auto update.

My experience with e-mail is that the times for a message to get from "A" to "B" can vary greatly. Insofar as system load apparently affects its speed I would hardly be surprised in variations hour to hour or day to day.

But then again I am not a systems expert. If there is one out there please comment.

What I am referring to is that as soon as my email comes through that shows the CR4 forum postings for the day, I will find that there may be for example as many as 3-10 commentors that have already responded to any given post.

The CR4 Daily Digest shows threads that began (usually) many hours ago. For example, last night's Daily Digest shows "Perimeter Fence" (posted 8:20 PM, 4/13) as the oldest topic, and "How to Take Soy Skins Away" (posted 3:40 PM, 4/14) as the most recent. The Daily Digest itself was sent out at 10:45 pm. In general, by the time I read the digest, many of the posts are so old that they no longer show up on the CR4 home page, and some have a great many replies.

The home page, BTW, shows the most recent posts at the top, whereas the Daily Digest shows the most recent at the bottom. If you want to keep up with the latest posts, you need to check the home page frequently -- the Daily Digest earliest posts can be slightly over 24 hours old, and even the latest can be a couple hours old.

Mine shows up late enough at night (10:30) that I never see it until the next morning...

The email may be delayed at any point on its way to you, your IPS may leave it on its server while repairs or updates are being made. And yes sometimes email can be delayed more than a day!

I am also retired engineer like you from Mumbai, India. I would rather prefer to read the posted answers as many as possible as you can learn more from more experienced persons. You can also post your answers little bit late. So be happy to read questions with answers too.Wish you happy retired life.

Hi

I can confirm that the Daily Digest email is sent out at around 10PM EST, and that the stories in the digest are from no later than around 5PM that same day. This gives the editorial staff time to review stories that will be in the digest. So that means that the absolute newest story in the digest will be at least 5 hours old.

Thanks
- Mark
