IEC standards

04/15/2008 2:20 PM

I'm beginning to work in international markets. Historically, I've always made use of NFPA 70 - NEC.

Is there an equivalent volume that provides a reference to IEC standards? I've found either small (very specific) volumes priced at $10-50 in the ANSI bookstore. Also, larger "packages" for $500-800 or more. My general needs tend to be industrial applications, wire sizing for branch circuits, MCC issues, placement of disconnects, etc.

Any advice / pointers are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would start with the IEC website at http://www.iec.ch/ but be aware that while most countries have adopted these standards, almost all will have some form of "national deviations". So, after you determine which IEC std you need, you need to look in each country where you wish to sell, and check with their specific deviations. For that, you need to identify the National Body. In the US its OSHA, in Canada its SCC and so on. You can find a complete list of these NBs on the IEC site (sorry don't have the link at my fingertips).
