China's Changing Motor Reputation

07/05/2006 12:33 PM

China used to have a reputation of cheap motor knockoffs. The price was good…but where was the quality, the innovation? This trend seems to be changing. This is what Karen Auguston Field discovered at the Hannover Fair in Germany this past April anyway. Dan Jones, president of the consulting firm Incremotion told Field, "Today it's no longer the cheap and dirty knockoffs - they (the Chinese) are starting to move into products with reasonable performance."

What do you think? And what does this mean for motor manufacturers around the world?

China's Changing Motor Reputation

It's pretty much what we saw in the Japanese recovery after WWII.
First copys and junk, then as confidence and capabilities
build, inovation and real competition for the rest of the market.

I still refuse to specify any PRC product, or to purchase PRC-made consumer goods, to the continuing use of lao gai (prison camp slave labor) plants. This is a moral, not a practical, matter; but it is one that I feel is important. Although design and finish are improving incrementally, materials quality (especially ferrous metals - forget about any sophisticated alloys) quite frankly sucks.
