That's One Powerful Vessel

07/07/2006 1:40 PM

Rolls-Royce has won a contract to build the world's largest offshore vessel. The ship (at least I think it's a ship - the press release keeps referring to it as a "vessel") will have an astounding 350 tonnes of pulling power. The behemoth vessel, UT 761CD, will be built by Aker Yards in Norway and will be delivered at the end of 2008.

Well, yes, but although 350 tons "pulling power" sounds a lot, but is she really the most powerful in yhe world. The 'Abeille Flandre', ocean-going tug that regularly stops tankers from going aground on the Brittany coast, has 160 tons of traction from 12,800 HP, but is built like a real tugboat, with the towing point amidships, and nothing aft in the way. The new "roller" has an enormous gantry, which would effectively prevent it from doing any useful work towing...

The ship will be equipped with towing pins to lead the tow rope aft. The ship is intended for subsea pipeline ploughing with the A-frame used for launch and recovery of the plough.

She is not primarily intended as a tug in the traditional sense and is certainly not intended for pushing operations. Tugs have the tow line a fair way forward to allow the ship to rotate about the tow point. This ship will be sufficiently powerful with tunnel and azimuthing thrusters in addition to forward bollard pull for any task she is likely to do.

She is intended as a replacement for the ship "Far Sovereign".
