Massive Dam Fails in Brazil

07/10/2006 9:20 AM

The Campos Novos dam in in Brazil is suffering massive structural failure only a few months after after its completion. Check out this picture. The structure is 200-metres tall and the reservoir behind it is nearly empty after leaking 4000 cubic metres of water per second (enough to fill an olympic sized swimming pool, so this article says). Apparently the dam has been leaking since it was first filled in October 2005. Although no one has been injured by the failure (there is another dam downstream that was able to staunch most of the flow), 750 families and 3,000 people have been displaced.

DAM collapse

07/11/2006 4:49 AM

This is spooky I just read the article on the Brazilian Dam collapse and actually posted a joke comment strangly I picked on the new orleans Dike sytem after earasing a coment about a comparison to the leaks of the Big Dig in Boston my town thinking it too disrespectful to the local workers who labored on that project.I then 30 seconds later put on the TV to see a developing story on a collapse of one of the tunnel cieings I'm sure it will make national news WOW !!!

Re:DAM collapse

When I was living in Boston the I-90 connector was leaking like a sieve. They always had slurry problems with that tunnel. I used to date a girl who's dad was one of the mechanics for the tunnel teams (he also work on the Deer Island tunnel).
The fact that 80% of the Back Bay is landfill doesn't help anything either.

Re:DAM collapse

Unfortunately someone died .I had friends working on that project that had stories and pictures .It may give people the oppertunity to disclose that information ,there's no jobs left to loose . Apparently the companies involved used there own engineers and it may be a case of overlooking things for profit .Hard to believe they would hang a 3 ton drop cieling with inadaquete fasteners. In fact it's said the anchoring in the ceiling was poorly done . I hope the quality of construction at the dam was a little better but I'm guessing ?

Wow

07/11/2006 9:20 AM

So what do they have to do now? Can this be "repaired" or will they have to tear it down and start again? One of the articles said that the construction of the dam was a ten year process. Wow, just wow.

Dama Failiour In brazil.

07/17/2006 1:11 PM

As i am geologist and have PG in geo techniques I at least belive that the constructors must had detailed study of the geology ,perticularly of Dam axis, Because from the pictures we can asumes that it has given away due to structural failiour , I think that when some body design the structure of this magnitude and of such a national importance they must designe it with atmost care, as it affects national exchequer and local peoples life .
