Windows Media player Sound card

04/21/2008 8:43 AM

I have a 2007 Dell computer Vista edition, and for what ever reason the Windows media player won't play sounds. There is an "X" on the bottom were the speaker is and the sound still works on the computer, just not on the media player.I'm not to computer savvy so any help would be appreciated.

Click on "start" go to all programs then accessories then entertainment then click on volume control. Make sure there are no check marks in the "mute" boxes and turn all the controls up to high. You can adjust the volume control right on the player to your desired volume. See if this works, if not, reply back and we'll look further.

Thanks, but I already tryed that last night to be sure it wasn't muted, and still got nothing. The message board came up with an error code and I went everywhere I could trying to get an explanation but just got frustrated. It almost seems as though it was deleted but that isn't the case.About two weeks or three weeks ago I burned some discs onto a couple of mixed CD's and it hasn't been used since. It doesn't make since why it's not working the next time I go to use it.Any help is appreciated.

Before go forward try restore system to time when all worked well. You may have received an update that fouled it up.

Next.

Go to start, right click my computer, click advanced system settings, click continue, click hardware tab then device manager. Look for any red or yellow tags.

If none uninstall then reinstall media player.

If tags expand sound devices then right click sound card go to properties and determine if item is working properly; if not use trouble shooter or up date driver or uninstall then reinstall.

send a line and an up date...

now where did I leave that fortune cookie calculator?

The sound on the computer(?)....from speakers? or computer?

2007 recently purchased?

Media player activated? Any other media players?

Sounds like player/sound card/Codex aren't communicating....possibly.

We'll need to establish where the machine is, set-up-wise, to point you to the solution.

Also, have you asked Dell phone support--assuming you're still in warranty? They should be able to guide you through the check out steps and quicly resolve...that's your best bet for a recent model machine.

You need to go to Start/Control panel/Sound and Audio devices to see if your sound card is being seen. You can try playing sounds in the sound tab, If it's gray your card is not being seen.

No one here mentioned Codecs.

Try searching for this file "XP_Codec_Pack-2.0.6.1.zip"

Thanks for all the help, this is really irratating,Three weeks ago it worked fine, now notta. In the programs it states that no hardware is found, but it was on there.I spoke to a computer tech last night who said that on some Dell computers the sound card would just stop working but wouldn't go into detail as to how to fix it.The whole thing is still under warranty but my better half may have thrown out the Dell service manual with the 800 support number on it (she may be the 1 who erased the sound card by accident also,if it's even possible to do that).Does anyone have that 800 number handy,if I can call Dell they'll have all my info on file.

follow the link from DGCYS to Dell support and download and update. This should scan your system and correct the trouble.

Hey everyone. This one deserves a GA for sure. Ink Tech, thanks for the thanks...and careful what you click from here on. If it looks too good (or enticing), it probably isn't (or will give you an infection) .
