Total Suspended Solids Concentration

I am working on project to reduce TSS concentration to 150 mg/L. The wastewater contains fiberglass, binders materials. This wastewater goes into the sump in the floor and is pumped to a grit channel sump and by gravity to the final pumping station. Its then pumped out to the public owned treatment works. The particles are so fine and tend to settle down in the sump and hardens. There are 3 sumps which need emptying of the these particulates on the average once a week. Can someone suggest how to reduce TSS concentration?

TSS Treatment

To suggest viable methods need to know some other details, such as max flow rate, continuous or "batch" discharge, volume per day discharged, are all contaminants inert or any organic/ biodegradeable content etc.

In general: 1)You can increase your filter at the front end with larger and finer filtering and/or combo scraper mechanism. Key is flow rate. 2)You can use a solvent or enzyme to reduce or inactivate the bonding particulates 3)You can use another additive to bond the particulates to form larger inactive particulates that will filter easier. 4)Others methods may include experimenting with UV properties, E-M properties, etc.

Mgmt practices and Treatment

There are many possibilities to reducing TSS. It is not real clear if you want to reduce TSS in your discharge to municipal system or just in the waste stream in general. There are management pracices that can be implemented to possibly reduce TSS getting into the waste stream, and treatment option in the waste conveyance system. Any options have to be evaluated and approved by the municipality as treeatment could adversely effect the operations of the waste water treatment facility and/or your waste discharge requirements may restrict your options.

Have You think of using electrical charging or electrical fields so the particles are atracted or directed to a collecting place for filtering or processing?

Methods of Removing Solids

07/25/2006 6:20 PM

I work for a company that sells basket type centrifuges. We have had very good sucess in the paint industry removing solids (paint) from water and actually recycling the water for continued use. Basically any solid that is heavier than water will separate out subjected to high G-Forces. Sounds like it would be a good match for your needs and we could run test samples to tell you for sure if it would work. We also rent small demo units for customers independant verification.
