Looking for Accurate Surface Temperature Probe

07/12/2006 9:10 AM

Eugene Dullaghan writes:
Hi, 1. Looking for an accurate surface temperature probe to be used as a "Standard Instrument", temperature readings needs to be reliable and repeatable.
2. Where is the best place to send a surface temperature probe for cal.certification...and how do they do it(ie) do they just submerge the probe in an oil bath or do a comparison against another known surface temperature probe or do they use a known Hot surface etc.....
3. Please let me know what people in your field or company are using ?????
Thank you for your help in this matter...

Accurate surface temperature Probe

Temperature probes for measuring surface temperature can be a) Contacting type b ) non contacting type. Depending on your application suitable probes can be selected . Contacting probes with RTD element will provide high accuracy readings and repetability will be 95%or higher.International calibration and testing Standards are in effect for these type of the probes. Non contacting probes will be also available for measurements . Depending on the maximum temperature limit you want to monitor Infrared pyrometer and CCTV radiation type temperature analyzer can be used.

Surface Temp

NIST is the primary certifying agency, but there are other secondary and tertiary testing labs which can do the job as well, their instruments being NIST tracable. Measuring surface temperature can be a little tricky, depending on what you're measuring and the environment in which measurements are being made. Wind or rough surface, for examples, make surface temperature measurements somewhat imprecise. Keithley Instruments make excellent electronic thermometers, and they can be purchased with NIST certification.
