"when appropiate to use window unit air-conditioner." Where one or two adjacent rooms are to be air conditioned.

"when appropiate to use split unit air-conditioner." For whole house applications or where the noise of a window unit cannot be tolerated. A gas pack might also be used to provide seasonal heat if needed.

They are pretty much interchangeable. Window units have the advantage of being all in one unit and can be removed from the case complete for servicing whereas split systems cannot. unfortunately they are somewhat ugly looking from outside the building.

split systems require much smaller wall opening and therefore do not pose as big a structural risk. In addition you can mount the external unit - and therefore the noise - a lot further away. A recent addition to the line up are heat Pump Air Conditioner/Swimming pool heater systems - the cold side cools the house while the hot side heats the pool. these generally use ducted air but otherwise similar to split system. they work best in mid and polar latitudes as the sun makes poolwater to damn hot to swim in in the tropics. as the pump is in the external unit, they are much more quiet for the operator than window units.

another type is full ducted, which is split system with the internal unit blowing through ducts to various rooms. These have one big andvantage as the inlet can be switched between internal air and external or 'mixed'.

another concepr is to place the external unit in the laundry attached so the dry air from the cold side evaporator is the inlet for the clothes dryer. this saves electricity as the dryer need not use its heater. Obviously the exhaust duct from the dryer needs to exit the area.

You will usually find that the Coefficient of Performance of a split system is better than a window unit. This is expressed as "cooling effect divided by the work done". This is usually found because the split system will have lower condensing pressures than a window unit which has to be more compact because of its need to fit in a window.

OK, to me this is the big difference; with a window unit, the supply and return is next to each other and cannot be changed. With a split system, you normally have duct work to separate the supply and return which will give you better movement and conditioning of the room air.

Split units have less power consumption, less noise level, and better look , out door unit may be install on roof or at hidden place externally, therefor it will not effect the external view plus the inside unit may be installed above false ceiling (ducted type) or exposed then we call it decorative type. split units have more flexibility to be installed on floor ,wall ceiling or even above false ceiling. while the window type will occupied part of the wall and it is impossible to install it in a room hasn't external wall, while this case can be easily solved by split unit which the indoor could be 15-25 m a way from outdoor unit.
