Grounding Solutions in Rocky Terrain

04/23/2008 3:29 PM

I am looking for safe, practical solutions for designing a ground grid for a substation in cold Northern, rocky terrain. There are a number of substations that have been installed in the Northern Canadian shield and I would like to know what some others have done in this type of environment for installing a low resistance ground electrode. Because these areas are usually very cold in the winter we also have to be concerned with seasonal variations and frost depths of more than a meter.

We are looking at areas to place a remote grid however I'm wondering if anyone has experience installing a ground well with conductive cement in rock. I don't suppose a horizontal trench would work since it would be subject to freezing and would have to be drilled deep into the rock where freezing would be less.

Any ideas or past experiences?

Hi,

I have no experience in this field but my thinking dictates the following:

garnite and ice are good insulators, so you need a good contact to the graundwater.

If no groundwater is available as the granite may be very extended you have to drill deep down until you hit a water filled fault.

Reinforced concrete is very good as the concrete makes a good connection to the surrounding material and the steel reinforcements carry most of the current.

Also if built to valid specifications any grounding can fail if hit by one of the very rare lightnings coming from the upper (positive) clouds of a thunderstorm. This can carry more than 100KA and can easily melt down an antenna mast 100mm diameter and 6mm wall thickness.

Well here in México theres a lot of rocky terrain the solution is refill the grounding site with electrolites. I wonder how much would be affected for the temperature conditions but thats all i know.
