Inflatable Space Station Prototype Launched

07/12/2006 7:07 PM

An American businessman has had a prototype inflatable space station module launched in Russia. He is Robert Bigelow, who owns the Budget Suites of America hotel chain. He and his partners, as Bigelow Aerospace, have put Genesis I into orbit, where it should remain for at least 5 years if all goes well. Experiments include study of insects on board. See http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060712/ap_on_sc/priva te_space_station for a story on this.

Inflatable Space Station

07/13/2006 2:56 AM

Quote from article: "In the 1990s, NASA studied inflatable technology for a possible trip to Mars, but later dropped the idea after deciding inflatable modules were too expensive. Bigelow Aerospace then licensed the technology from NASA."

Will be interesting to see if Bigelow Aerospace can do it cheaper - and will NASA then 'buy' the licence back?
