Multi-Sensing Point

04/24/2008 11:15 PM

I have a application for quantification of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This issue focus on detecting wrist-pulse. I want to adopt pressure sensor to do it.

The sesnor specification is: sensitivity>0.48psi, one sensing point area < 1mmx1mm, total sensing points are at least 27.

Do you have any suggestions about sensor selection?

I think that detection of the pulse can be more easily achieved by using the principle used in "Pulse Ox" measuring units. a clip is placed on an index finger that has an LED shining into the fingerprint area and a phototransistor sensing the LED's light that comes through the fingernail. The qualities of the signal from the phototransistor that are used to determine blood oxygen levels are beyond me but the unit also measures pulse rate as an extra. Here is the Wiki for pulse oximeter:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Shepherd's response. We have to weight on wrist step by step and detect wrist-pulse. This procedure is based on theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).

So, not only pulse rate but also pulse trend, weighting position, pulse strength, pulse shape. To do so, single pressure sensor can't afford it.

My idea is:

Maybe multi-sensing point,

Pressure distribution(tactile sensor or image pressure distribution)

can do it or anyone have suggestions.

Can do it - but this is a fairly significant project and canot be done here. Need a LOT more information re requirements and constraints (of TCM).

Not being familiar with your application in wanting to detect the wrist pulse, so suggest using an earlobe clip pulse sensor that is available rather cheaply in a bicycle type computer attachment.

You're making it more complicate then it is.

The traditional Chinese way is just another way to measure heart beat and relative pulse strength, without electronic. Any current electronic heart beat measuring system can give you all the info you need: beat rate, pulse strength, duration etc. The one used in hospital with pulse graph works really well. Design a system (software/hardware) to use and analysis its signal and you got everything you need.

BTW I am Chinese.
