"Straw testing"?????

04/25/2008 3:40 PM

Hello,

Trying to calibrate in house our Velometer Jr's. Was given a test method that I want to run by some others for possible usefulness and acceptance. I realize the correct way, but if able to do this in house would cut costs signifigantly.

Take a box of straws. Remove both ends and afix to a 3 speed fan. this will eliminate side winds and crossing. Use calibrated Velometer as standard and compare with ones being calibrated and ensure within spec. of each other.

Also was brought up to use set up and anometer as ref. to velometers,

Anyone?????

Any inhouse test proceedure is fine as long as a calibrated instument (back to a traceble standard) is used for comparison and the proceedure is appropriate, reproducible and well documented.

Build your rig, do loads of tests comparing two reference meters, take the data plot the graphs, do the stats, keep the results in your QA file.
Build a 2nd reference jig...for when someone spills coffee into the first one.

Document it all and then accept your resulting promotion/bonus with good grace and buy all your colleagues cakes! (Also send me a tin of Tuna)

Thank you for the support and direction. I thought it would be ok as long as I had a backed up system in place.

White or plain tuna?

Cheers.

I'm a great beilever in creating quality systems how you want them.
Always remember the ststem is there for you...not the other way around.
(And if you write the system, it is always easier to remember and comply with)

Sounds good bettsd44, I've used straws as well as very thin walled heat shrink tubing to create a laminar flow element before now and it works well.

Just as long as the airflow to the input (from the fan) is uniform across the inlet to the straws.

John.
