Electric Car Speed Record

05/05/2005 10:01 AM

A team of engineers have built an electric car they hope will reach speeds over 300 mph. The car was built in a barn in the English countryside with money from home equity loans. The current speed record for an electric car currently stands at 245 mph and was set in 1999 by a US team. The "e=motion" as the car is dubbed, is driven by 52 batteries and has no mechanical gears. Nevada will shut down a 12-mile stretch of state Route 93A about 25 miles south of Wendover for the attempt. There is no prize for acheiving the speed record aside from being the first. I have to believe that if they succeed, they'll at least get some kind of money from patents or endorsements or something.

Perception

05/05/2005 5:11 PM

My perception of electric cars, which may or may not be shared by others, is that they are eco-friendly but decidedly undramatic because of their speed limitations. A vehicle that can travel 300 mph would be a powerful marketing tool - and a great way to change perceptions.

They bailed

05/06/2005 2:08 PM

The operators of the cars said they were experiencing problems with one of the 52 batteries that power accessories on the vehicle. They plan to try again Friday (today).
