Power Transformer control cables

04/27/2008 4:48 AM

Dear All,

I m working on site in Saudi arabia for a substation. I have a doubt in termination of control cables in power transformer. I could not find the location for the terminal box for the control cables which is used for Oil temp indicator, Oil level indicator etc which is taken to RTCC and protection panels in the transformer general arrangement drawing. Can anyone please where will be the location of this termination .?

Hello dev2255

You evidently expect Members to be mind-readers, because you give no description of the transformer, at all, nor a photo, or schematic.

If your Transformer is new, there should be, sent separately by the makers, 2 sets of full diagrams and details, one via courier or post, the other either in the tap-changer control box, or located somewhere on the Transformer itself, perhaps in a large envelope inside the low-Voltage terminal box.

Please advise the following:

  • Make of Transformer
  • Size of Transformer
  • Model Number of Transformer
  • Serial Number of Transformer

Note: If the transformer has an attached tap-changer, it may be possible that the termination points you seek, are located in that cubicle.

Advise further, with thank you.

Kind Regards....

Trace the cables from the indicators to the panel!!!

The cables will be in metal or flex conduits.

It will go the a wiring panel on the side of the transformer.

be careful since this box may also have CT wiring , fan power and other protection wiring such as sudden pressure and gas detector signals.

Definitely you will find these cables in the local control panel which is attached to the main tank of the transformer.

Please note that such cables for the transformer (mechanical protection & indications) are supposed to be directly connected to the transformer remote control & protection panels (and not to the RTCC), via the transformer local control panel. The RTCC panel is another panel which includes the AVR relay for automatic control (remote/supervisory) of the OLTC.

Dear, Friend

Recently, transformer manufacturers are using what so called DGPT2 for protection of transformer against high temperature, gas pressure and low oil level. control cables are wired from this unit to a small JB located at transformer side and then you need to wire them to the transformer incomer CB for tripping or initiating an alarm signals in case of fault.

If the side JB is not fitted by your transformer supplier, then you can request such JB and carry out the wiring as above.

Dear Guest,

You are right; however, the DGPT2 system is not applicable for monitoring and protection of HV power transformers. It is normally used to monitor and protect Distribution Transformers especially the Hermetically Sealed type.
