Welding Procedure

04/29/2008 9:06 AM

Hello everyone,

this is related to welding procedure specification ( WPS)

section ix can you explain me, since i find difficult to find my doubt.

DOUBT

my concern regarding the thickness qualified for each process

PQR 1

test coupon thk - 14.27mm

GTAW process / weld metal deposited thk-4mm

SMAW " " -10.27mm

PQR 2

test coupon thk - 30mm

SAW process deposited weld metal thk-30mm (welded double sided )

a wps has 2 supporting pqr(consider above details pqr1and pqr2)

total thickness range qualified according to wps is 38mm for SAW and 20mm for smaw.

if u need more details i shall furnish.

how wps informs 38mm and 20mm respectively

i know it's 2 times the thickness , whethr wps is mistake ?

From ASME Code, Section IX, Para. QW-452.1(b), the thickness of weld metal qualified is twice the thickness of weld metal in the test coupon.

And no doubt that any PQR can be supported by one or more WPS and vice versa, i.e. any WPS can be supported by one or more PQR.

thank you for your reply, again i am repeating the datas

wps - x shows thk qualified range - SMAW 20mm

- SAW 38mm

supporting pqr 1 shows thk DEPOSITED - GTAW 4mm

" smaw 10.27mm

test coupon thk 14.27mm

supporting pqr 2 shows deposited thk - SAW 30mm (double sided welded i.e double v edge preparation.

test coupon thk - 30 mm

my doubt is how the wps - x, shows Mx thk qualified smaw 20mm

Mx " SAW 38mm

2t means it should be 60mm , please go through and advice me.

thanks and regards

Hello, Abdel is correct about the 2x thickness qualified. What I am having problem with is the SAW (submerged arc welding) being used in conjunction with GTAW or SMAW. Because the 20 mm thickness for SMAW on the WPS is correct I think the 38mm for SAW is simply a typing mistake.

Hello mate,

According to ASME section IX.

Since the PQR uses 30mm plate as base metal, that PQR qualifies the procedure for welding plates ranging from 5mm to 60mm (twice of 30mm which is your test coupon thickness).

Also, since only SAW has been used to weld the coupon, so that indicats you can deposit weld metal using SAW upto 60mm.(again, twice of test coupon thickness).

That means the WPS prepared from this PQR can use the SAW to deposit weld metal upto 60mm using this PQR. But in the WPS in question only 38 mm needs to be deposited.

So, it reads only 38 mm.

There is nothing wrong with the WPS.

I hope this will clear your doubt.
