Muffler Design and Manufacturing Methods

07/23/2006 3:00 PM

Good Morning Respected Engineers, scientists and students over there, I am Solaank, and I am in need of the design procedure as well as the manufacturing method of the Mufflers for the sound reduction of the Air compressor in our Thermal Workshop. I would like you all to help me to suggest some sites as well as your guidelines for the process which I am go to undertake. I hope for the positive response from you all people over there. Solaank...

Can you give us some design parameters? What noise from the compressor are you trying to muffle, noise from escaping air, motor and compressor noise, etc.

Howdy, Assuming that you want to dampen the noise produced at the intake of the compressor I suggest using a resonant cavity approach. A compressor is an ideal candidate for resonant cavities because it opetates at a very consistant frequency. By placing a volume of air which resonates at the same frequency but 180deg out of phase with the compressor in the intake path the pressure wave should be reduced.

Sir, I have to muffle the sound coming out from the exhaust of the compressor when the exhaust valve is opened. In the Thermal laboratory while performing the practicals, when the exhaust is opened the exhaust sound is so sharp that a person at a distance of 150 to 200 meters is got irritated. Can you suggest me the design for the muffler or some material related to design of mufflers.
