Overspray on NEW machines, need solutions for removal

05/09/2008 10:20 AM

My company has a serious issue of paint overspray where lifts were used and no protection of the machines was in place such as covering the vehicles or taping them off to prevent such. I would like to add at this point that this was before my time, as I have now been handed the problem of getting the overspray off without removing the original (new machines) paint...ahem.

I have some other vehicles that I'm being allowed to clean by a detail shop that also does body work, at an extremely reduced price versus that of re-painting. It seems that due to the dusty environment that alot or all of the overspray is being removed by buffing and pressure washing. Alas that is not possible with the lifts as they were brand new and almost completely covered in grey industrial paint.

Do you have any ideas that my company and I can use that will help us remove the overspray without removing the clear coat of the original paint job. Since there are quite a few machines that have this problem it is going to be an extremely costly event if I cannot find another solution.

The contents of the paint are listed below:

C-M24 2B-H CAS Number

Stoddard Solvent 8052-41-3

Soya Alkyd Resin 66070-60-8

Titanium Dioxide 13463-67-7

Talc 14807-96-6

Zinc 7779-90-0

Sunflower Alkyd 67762-17-8

Aluminum Phosphate 7784-30-7

This is a Benjamin Moore paint that is Industrial grade made in Canada.

I really appreciate any help that you can throw my way, time is of the essense- the company has kindly granted me until the end of next week to remedy this situation.

Thank You again for your help

There is no guarantree the clearcoat is not already permanently marred by the solvent.

The Soybean resin is created using a process that dissolves about 60 deg C.

I suggest trying a steam cleaning or heat gun process.

This will only work if the Clear coat underneath is made of a material that can handle the high temperatures. Test in an inconspicuous area.

It might be more cost effective to bite the bullet and aggressively remove the overspray and repaint the equipment.

Be sure you offer that to your boss, suggest you could re-paint any color the company wants.

Hi there,

I would agree but biting the bullet in this case would involve more than several cranes, almost fifteen lifts, a couple hundred passenger vehicles and more than several small all terrain vehicles.....I'm really counting on you guys for a light at the end of the tunnel. I liked the heat gun idea, but the weather here at West Point has been consistently over 70 degrees....leaves me wondering if it would still be effective.

Techno is talking degrees C and I presume you are talking degrees F.

Try what techno suggested before you rationalise it away.

I hear ya guest, but I wasn't rationalizing anything away. It the only technigue I have at this point to use. Major league helpful, sorry if I came off that way, not my intention.

These sugestions and the brainpower on this site may just 'save the day'. I check often to see what's popped up next, can't wait for more.
