Old classic bike seat broken!

05/11/2008 5:59 AM

Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you ever had any experience with repairing an old motorcycle seat that had the cover come loose on one side. It seems just stretched over the foam and clipped on the metal pan with weird looking double looped flat hooks.

Problem is I cannot get the cover to stretch that far and I was wondering if any had a suggestion I could try? I will not pay a seat repair bloke at this time as I just have not got the money right now. In future I will need to replace the foam as well but that can wait.

Suggestions and or experiences much appreciated here.

Sorry... no real suggestions...I've ended up making a whole new seat and cover before now.

Those clip things do the job..but like you say it's virtually impossible to get the stretch...dunno how they do it...special press or vacuum thingy?

Once it has split, I think you are basically stuffed.

Good luck, nice looking seat...

I was thinking about a hydraulic press with a rounded sort of shape as pusher against the cover and a proper fitting something for the seat pan below.

The foam is quite hard so my own minuscule weight (stop laughing you rotten cat) does not even dimple the thing.

I do think though you got some wires crossed with the stuffing. It is not me who is stuffed, it is still neatly in the seat which is why it is so difficult to fix.

Fortunately the cover has absolutely no rips or tears which is great.

The seat is an original Harley FLH from early 70ies. I am gonna fit it to my Retro Glide WHICH IS STILL NOT ON THE ROAD AND THE SUN IS SHINING

Hey Case,

Maybe you could try a piece of 2x4 and a couple c-clamps to compress the foam.

That is a good suggestion, I might just try that. I have almost managed to get some back on by simply having my whole weight on it and try squeeze it back but with the foam compressed that far, it wobbles really easily and tends to try and throw me off again. What I need is somebody to hold me upright while I am doing it....now where did I last see my daughter?

What is the seat material? If it's vinyl I think you're only option is a light application of heat from a hair dryer. Leather might stretch if you wet it out well. The problem is that just about any material that old is going to have shrunk a bit and getting an old material to re-stretch is pretty much impossible without creating damage somewhere else. New wine into old wineskins, as it were.

I think no amount of hairdryer is going to be enough given the size of the seat. The other problem is the foam, it is really old and hardened in places. If at all possible I want to preserve it for now and try to get it to go for a few more years giving me a chance to save up for a new upholstery job. They want between £150 to £200 for that seat and that is what I roughly paid for it.

You need to have that seat re-apholstered by all means. The materials are worn and the life has just dried out of that seat. There are several shops in every city across the country, or in most big cities of most countries around the world.

This is the best you can do for yourself......have it done by a proffessional.

It will be done eventually but not right now. I have spoke to some in the trade and it is quite expensive as these guys tend to do the classic vehicles all the time, their prices are slightly inflated.

Heat and patience should work. If you were to place it in a vacuum bag it would easily pull into shape, but in order to do the repair you would have to either penetrate the bag or be in there with it. Talk about being under pressure! You would have to be real good at holding your breath!

These seat are still quite plentiful on Ebay. I have one laying on a shelf from a early '60's Panhead.

I think I need to drink more beer for longer and just use the excess weight and patience.

I will try some of the suggestions mentioned here and above but if you don't mind I will give the vacuum a miss.

If I bugger this one up how much do you want for yours

Only kidding, I have bought mine on e-bay as well about a year ago. I ended up paying just over £150 and had an USAF friend of mine send it to his army post box so it costed me nothing but a few beers.

Do you have the large buddy seat or is it the solo version. Mine is the buddy version and it is 6" thick foam and 21" long. The solo one is only 15 to 16" long and much thinner.

The one I have on the shelf is a white buddy seat just like yours. I have a black solo seat on my old duo-glide (it's more comfortable and eliminates having to give rides).

Re: Old classic bike seat broken!

That last thing is a problem. I have always involved my family in my riding and even up to the point of building my own leaning sidecar as I was adamant I was not going fixed rig style.

I now tried to make this point as the daughter is getting too old and not all that interested any longer but the wife keeps eying up the seat and saying "I hope I will be comfortable on that" !

I actually hope she will want to learn to ride her own but I have little chance of that I think. Reality knocks on the door in a certain way and I started to recognise that sound a while back

I am surprised you find the solo one more comfy as this big baby seems really plush to me. Of course I have never actually sat on it yet

I had the solo one as well on my servi car and I have to say that it was actually very nice to sit on. With the hard tail it did bounce a bit but I could see it being ok on a suspended bike.

God I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to riding again. The bike has been on the ramp since September. Too frigging long

Try steam to heat it? Might make the foam and material more plaible

Look you....urm....tupperware bike owner (as in plastic with badly fitting lids), I never said shot and lumpy, I said it has hardened in some places. That is not the same as lumpy or shot. It is still in the right shape and soft enough for good comfort, just not pliable enough to push it in all the way without creating a lot of foam crusty dust from the edges where it has hardened.

I don't think steam will do it any good so with all respect I will give that one a miss too just like the vacuum. Thanks for the suggestion, vinyl would normally become nice and soft with steam.

I don't like Corbin seats full stop (period for the Americans)

This seat is over 30 years old and is a true classic by now. It is not beyond repair and has no rips or tears anywhere, the edge has just come off the metal pan in that one small place. If it were some cheap throw away replaceable thing, such as the seat of your cbr pocket rocket, I would replace it as well.

Only kidding, I should be nice to you for we are all brothers on 2 wheels.

Re: Old classic bike seat broken!

Im was just offering a suggestion with the hope of helping. You said the seat would be redone eventually, hence the suggestion to get a new cover for it made. To me a seat that is torn, with hard lumpy spots... that is shot IMO. Guess it depends on the level of thriftiness

I am pretty sure that many upholsterers use steam when fitting seats/cushions etc to make it plaible and help keep wrinkles out... but an old seat like that might just fall apart in steam

Corban was merely a suggestion, there are many companies out there.

I realize your older, slower (wearing tassles on your gear so you know that you are moving), cheaper, and probably holding on tightly to one of those beers you mentioned earlier so I'll let the trash talk on my bike go

By the way it is not a CBR, wrong colors completely. She is a K7 GSXR 750. Dry weight of 360lbs stock, (I have knocked almost 15lbs off it) putting out 128Hp to the wheel. It isn't for everyone but I'm still young enough to appreciate a finely tuned machine such as her.

I also have dirt bikes (CR250 & XL250R) and a Bandit 650S ABS. I'm looking into a touring bike for long range trips. Probably will wind up with a Goldwing as I have always been a fan of those boats.

Good luck in your restoration.

EDIT: oh as far as my bike being cheap, disposable and throw away... that bike lists $12000 Can and I have also put another $4000 in mods into her. That one kinda stung

Haha, so the old and trusted way of multi angled, multi faceted attack still works, I knew I would get to you on one of those things

Too much of this bollocks going on for real to take it serious though, isn't that right. I like the jokes about tassels and beer and old and duck tape so it does not fall of. Liking Harley's you learn to or you get out if it bothers you, that separates the men from the boys see, you champion our cause even if you don't like it

I used to have Yams, Hons and more Hons. Never had a suz or a Kwak but did fancy one of those SRAD somethings when they were the hot thing to have. Some really nice Jap stuff out there now and I must say that their race bred style is better than their Harley clone rubbish. Those metric cruisers should be dumped IMHO.

Did you use to have a CBR as your name states?

Anyway, for the last time, the damn seat ain't broke OK! No rip in it just loose, pffft some never learn.

It is not a restoration either to be honest. The bike is from 2001 and I just wanted to get rid of that enormous fairing that hung of the front like it was never meant to have anything in common with it. I think you are right to call them boats.

I ripped all that off and rebuilding it in the likeness of those late 60ies FLH. That is why I have got this seat. This whole project was only supposed to be some mild winter maintenance, yeah right.

LOL all in jest I know:)

2 wheeled brothers gotta stick together :P

This is my second GSXR actually. My first was a 98 GSXR 600 SRAD, very quick for her time.

The CBR in my handle stands for Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I've had 2 of them now (my first one was named Groovy) and hope that if my current male passes Hip and Eye exams coming soon that we can breed him or get a good blooded female. Tough, strong, determined, intelligent and loyal dogs. Well suited to our climate here and the colder waters here.

I hear ya on the projects dragging on longer then thought... I have a couple Eagle Talons, and a 73 Harley Davidson 350 (old enduro like bike) sitting in parts in my shop.

I definately want a touring bike over a cruiser though. As it is to be for touring and long trips, I do plenty of day trips on the GSXR but it isn't too comfortable of a riding position to be at it for too long.

GL fixing that broken down, lumpy and shot seat! LOL sorry I shouldnt have I know

Eagle talons have too many wheels to fetch my interest Only good for when you need to transport something.

The 350 is probably one of those Harley purchased brands they used in the Army. Most had rotax engines or Amstrad engines. Just like Polaris, Aermacchi and a few I have forgotten about, they were destined to fail as Harley did not really put the effort in them at the right time (if there was a right time). The Harley sprint is a classic example of how to wrong something good.

That SRAD Gixer you mentioned, was that the one with the hump back seat? If so that was the one I had my eyes on for a while.

With regards to cruising or touring, it is not just down to the bike you know. I did 4,500 miles in 2 weeks on my Sportster 883 back in 2003 when they had the Barcelona parties on for Harley's 100th. My wife vowed to divorce me if I did not buy another bike with a bigger seat.

So we bought the 2001 SE Tour Glide. I did 1600 miles in 2 days on this which included pitching my tent and drinking beer in Germany. I went to the European Bike Week in Austria which took 95000 people over the week it was on. Fabulous but had some seat sores for a few days. I think of the "funny walk" after such mileage as a badge of honour, not many will join you for such journeys especially in the HOG scene. They rather trailer their bike to the village border and push it in. Same in Spain, we saw almost as many trailer trash as we saw real bikers.

I have also been to Sweden and to Norway to 2 different Super rallies. Both journeys taking 2 to 3 days. These rallies are organised by the Federation of Harley Riders and attract between 15,000 to 25,000 people every year. Could not go this year due to lack of money. You will find people there that rode their hard tail Harley all the way from Italy to the rally taking 3, 4 or 5 days. They really walk funny but you better not say something. Nice guys though and a damn lot better to be with than most HOG fuzzies as we call them.

You say you are in Canada, must have a long winter lay up period or are you all right for the riding season?

LOL @ the wife giving ya the gears over the seat:) My wife just started riding last year. She loves to ride, but I'm sure she'd jump at the chance to be a passenger on a plush touring bike.

Below is a pic of my SRAD taken last summer. (bonus shot of the CBR on the left)

The HD I have was made in Italy if I recall. It used to be my uncle's before he went to the work for the Air Farce.

I found it funny that you wouldnt consider a Corban seat and yet you drive a HD. What's up with that?

Sounds like you put on quite a few miles each year. I have 46,000KM on the SRAD now and 18,000Km on the K7 GSXR

We don't get many rallies up here, but my hometown hosts the one and only Canadian Sportbike Rally. It's a hoot to see a few thousand sport bikes all get together at once.

The riding season here in Canada is from May to October or early December if lucky.

Kinda sucks to have all the bikes in the basement workship sitting idle for so long :(

We have three of the felines here and they all get along remarkably well although the cats tend to get a little short fused when they tire of the dogs affections.

Ok now you have done it, I want:

1) similar workshop with nice woody look cupboards for my .....errm....BEER

2) That many bikes of any sort (but at least one real one like a Harley)

3) Your wife to teach my wife to RIDE herself.

4) anything else you have I could use, want, need (strike out as needed)

Yes I like to pile on the mileage as the thing was made for it. If it did not like it it should have become a comfy chair.....ok bad comparison

The CBR is a lot leaner than I expected. Over here retrievers are normally old peoples companions and get to retrieve little more than slippers or newspapers and become morbidly obese retrievers. Sorry state some are in make you wanna cry.

You needs to git you some darn duck tape.

No only kidding. The ratcheting tie down straps that are commonly used to retain a cycle when transported by trailer, might be able to compress your seat material sufficiently to allow you to reattach the existing retainer that I thought you said was still usable. With the ratcheting works on the bottom to prevent damage. Possibly more than one to compress where needed.

They gots duck tape in camo now. You cain't hardly see it.

Have a visit with your local shoe repair or upholstry fellow. You know the one who has been around forever. They have seen it all before and might be able to provide the cheap help you are looking for.

Time to ride! Repair and polish when it snows.

Getting seriously sick of fixing things right now. I have been waiting for the paint job to be done since March as it is not allowed to interfere with normal workloads. That is what you get when you have to do things on the cheap like I have to.

I'm the sort of guy that likes to replace damaged parts, I guess I'm spoiled.

I'd suggest buying a seat from a comapny such as Corbin http://www.corbin.com/ I guarentee that after your first ride you'll be glad you did. VERY comfy seats.

It looks to me the origoinal seat is torn along the seam, if you fix it let us know how?

I know the approach I'd take, start by draping amply proportioned woman over seat at which point I#m pretty sure an good idea would form itself.

I only wish my bikes problem was the seat, not the dang missing injun.

With a clever contraption made by myself out of my trusty log vice and some lorry ratchet straps and lumps of wood.

Loads of good help and the occasional lashing of anger

The result is now a properly seated cover with the exception of some of the dog ears formed by years of being left in the wrong position.

Thanks to all that suggested how to do this, it ended up a combination of some made by you and things I had at my disposal.

Hope it stays like this until the funds are here for a complete upholstery job in the (far) future.

Well done! Amazing what the right tools can do! Too bad they are usually not in our own garage. Inspiration + Persperation wins every time.

Local forcast is for mid to high 20C on a long weekend in honor of Queen Victoria. I'm sure she would have made a great rider. Locally she is the patron mother of weekend rowdies.

I have an early 60's Puch 250 Twingle in my small collection. The seat pan was rotted on the edges so I welded them up and took it in for a new custom cover. The shop used a press they referred to as a bun. Simply it was a padded press that compressed the seat cover, foam, and pan together. They attached new trim to hold the cover and released the clamp. If there was a wrinkle they would re-clamp and adjust the trim. Simple to do. The press idea is right on track. Try a sand bag under a piece of plywood or something of that sort.

Dang it. I should have kept reading all of the posts. I stopped after it seemed the only input was cat, dog, mouse friendly and something about large women.

Glad you fixed it.
