Below you will find a hand picked selection of sites to give you verbal understanding.

concepts.

But to truly master this, you must get statistical training. THAT means doing the math, and much much fighting with the eraser (and the professor.)

Otherwise, you will be merely deluded into thinking you have knowledge, when in fact all yoou have is ideas. YOU GOTTA DO THE MATH!

Personal advice: Get hundreds of similar things from different places. I happened to use sea shells picked up on my travels. You could use stones, leaves, anything. but get them from different places, and different times.

Now Taking each batch as a separate population, use your observations and statistics to describe the batch. When you have completed one batch, do another. Then compare the populations to each other using different statistical tools.

I gave that assignment to my daughter when she was sent home from highschool for a prank, and she had a very productive couple days with ruler, calculator, and statistics text book.

Until you can do that, please don't hang up a shingle.

Heres a source list for you:

http://www.asq.org/ (see learn about quality tabs)

This is an important site:

Non technical treatment of Taguchi methods:

good paper: electronic perspective

MIT courseware oon Water Quality Cntrool:

If you have excel and want to "practice" this software is widely in use:

http://www.pqsystems.com/

You asked about qa/qc; personally, I'm more about continuous improvement once you get a system established, this site has no sense of design aesthetics, but has great material:http://www.1000ventures.com/business_guide/mgmt_kaizen_main.html

Finally, if you are into improving manufacturing operations in smaller manufacturing emterprises, their's noone better than Dr.Shahrukh Irani at OHIO STATE:

Great answers and I'd like to add to it:

There isn't any free path that you can follow to get the knowledge needed to be proficient at Quality Control. There are other areas concerned besides just the statistical aspect that is normally associated with Six Sigma.

There is Accounting classes that need to be addressed.

Quality Control isn't all about taking and testing samples. It also involves finding improvement in the processes, finding ways to cut waste and reduce costs in the processes.

Statistical Quality control isn't practiced in every type of manufacturing.

There's the need to learn Accounting in order to find what the cost drivers are in the production processes. This will help to find the weaknesses in the manufacturing process. There are cost drivers in every industry and service. Whether it be materials, labor, maintenance, what ever influences production is a cost driver and it can be the same type of business but the cost drivers might be different.

You also have to understand how to get the most out of the employees. I recommend studying up on Edward W. Deming and his 14 points. Also read up on Jung.

The important thing is that you really need to take courses like Total Quality Management through some college. That will give you the fundamentals. Take some Statistics courses and Accounting courses.

If you're going to be working or are working for an industry that involves a lot of statistics then I'd recommend going through the Six Sigma Green Belt training.

Another aspect of Quality Control is documentation. Keeping records of what was wrong, how it was corrected and how it benefited the company. That is what ISO9000 is all about. Japanese business people outsourcing their work won't accept a bid from another company unless they maintain documentation on how they correct the problems and errors.

There's no free lunch when it comes to getting Quality Control training. You're going to have to invest a little. You can still read up on it and get a good idea on the theories but for statistics and accounting you're going to need to get some classroom knowledge because the free information doesn't tell you everything. For instance using the value of "i" in a statistical equation and using summations are a lot of fun.

departing from your specific request,

if i were to have your responsibilities right now, i would be concentrating on making the processes in assembly better documented, The people better trained on those instructions, and the purchasing specifications clearer.

As an inspector, you will find plenty, but ultimately its not about what you find as much as it is that " what you find tells you about the weaknesses of your systems."

Hello,

I know it's not in the US but I am finishing a Quality Management certificate course Through Nait.ca. It has some E-learning courses. They are based on the ISO 9001-2008 standards. I hope this might help you.
