Hyperlink locator/editor

05/11/2008 12:20 PM

Does anyone know of a utility to find hyperlinks (within MS Office apps) and globally change part or all of the path?

I use Excel spreadsheets to keep track of my docs - a sheet for a particular job may have links to other spreadsheets (calc. sheets, items lists etc), Word docs, pdfs, VB projects, OrCAD projects etc.

The problem with this is that if I move or rename a folder, the hyperlinks targeting anything in the folder are all useless. It makes any kind of disk reorganization a nightmare. I've got a couple of hundred job sheets, each with anything up to about 100 links.

Any (practical!) solutions gratefully received.

If there's nothing already available, I might have to have a go at writing one myself (when I get some time).

Would 'Edit, find/replace' work?

Good idea - worth a try. Tried it, doesn't work. Thanks anyway.

There is a free suite of tools called ASAP Utilities that have a lot of very useful tools already programmed for you.

I believe using 2 of the tools in the suite you can get what you want. It would probably work easier if all the links are in the same column but you could probably figure a way to do it if they aren't.

1. Web » Extract hyperlinks...
Extract hyperlinks from selected cells and/or all shapes/images on the active worksheet.
You can choose to have the hyperlink displayed in the cell itself or in the column right next to the cell or shape.

2. Use Regular Find and Replace to change the links

3. Web » Activate hyperlinks (create from cell values)Create a hyperlink from the values in selected cells.A quick alternative of Excel's = HYPERLINK () function.

You can choose to use the "regular" hyperlink or to use the =HYPERLINK() formula to create the hyperlinks. The formula-method is preferred for shared workbooks and when it involves a large amount of hyperlinks.

I'm actually amazed that Excel can't use relative links instead of absolute links.

I read that it has to do with the way original Excel 1 was designed for old school Macs that didn't have a file hierarchy system. Weird.
