Eco - Balanced Township

07/31/2006 8:18 AM

This is from a small time consultant.
I have a concept of developing an Ecologically Balanced Township. Where all care is taken right from the selection of materials to the usage of utilities considering the next 15 yrs post completion of the project. Can any eco- lover join hands to shape up the project and make it a reality with more eco - systems and methods...At present we like to use totally recyclable material or recycled material or waste generated from the society in the form of rubble (instead of breaking the rocks).. alternative cooling methods with minimum energy usage, Solar power, Using hydrogen power cells, uttility water recycling and minimising of utility water, Training to the residents on effective ecological balancing systems...

KISS Principal

Hydrogen power cells?

Just remember to use the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principal. Before electricity and air conditioning, the native Americans lived in ecological balance with nature. They weren't always comfortable, but their ecological footprints quickly faded into obscurity.

Balanced community; reclaiming

08/01/2006 8:54 AM

1. While driving through New Mexico or Arizona (not sure which) near the Four Corners, we ran across such a community on or very near the Res. Solar panels, wind power, round houses, earth insulation, recycled water, the whole nine yards. 2. The white man's imprint fades pretty quickly too. 2a. After a generation has lived with something, it becomes the new norm. 2b. The things that we build fall apart rapidly. The wagon-wheel ruts cutting across the prairie are barely visible (if you know where to look). The old rail bed near Promontory Point (where the railroads were joined across the continent) can be distiguished from the surrounding desert and salt-marsh (pretty _flat_, no?). Perhaps future generations (after returning to nature) will wonder whether that flat section was intended to make walking easier. Route 66 (the unused portions) is being reclaimed. As is Route 6. It is a constant struggle to keep nature from claiming the plot of ground on which we _live_, for that matter. (I call it the war of the green. Battles occur every week. The St. Augustine can encroach 6 inches in 2 weeks, in some spots, 3 inches in 2 weeks generally. Not to mention that vine trying to kill the trees and bushes.)

Do the right thing...

One resource: LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (http://www.usgbc.org/) may help with a couple of ideas and possible rebate programs. Since my job has gone to the toilets and such, keep in mind the performance of the equipment you use or spec. TOTO (www.totousa.com) makes the best performing toilets (moves it all in one flush; floaters, sinkers, and chum) and they look good.

More of the Same

Here's a link to a page that links many such projects already in progress. Why reinvent the wheel? Learn from the experience of others.

How ecological is an Hydrogen power cell?

08/21/2006 3:04 AM

Just think about it: how is an hydrogen power cell made, how to make the hydrogen? Do you know hydrogen can't be stored for long periods. Typical loss of a well designed system is 4%/day. My idea is that hydrogen is the biggest lie that the oil industry has generated. Use pure wind power, when there is no wind, you simply have no power. Learn to live with it. When you might have a height diffenence you might be able to stockage power by pumping water up is case of excess wind and letting it come down through a turbine to supply power when it is needed. Grow oilseeds and modify an engine so that it can run on the pure vegetable oil, much more ecological than biodiesel and no proble in hot regions. Try to stock the summer heat for winter use. Never forget, man can't live ecological when more than one fammily lives on a space of some square km.
