How to Test Silicone Adhesion?

08/01/2006 10:41 AM

Our company manufactures a product that includes a layer of silicone on one side, and a wax or resin ink layer on the other side of a thin film (PET). This film is then tightly rolled so the silicone layer ends up pressed against the ink layer. Sometimes the silicone sticks to the ink layer when the film is unrolled, which is undesirable.

We are looking for a way to test the adhesion of the silicone layer of each lot before it is rolled. With the ink side, we use simple scotch tape to see if the ink will peel off or stick to the film, but obviously silicone does not stick to scotch tape.

I am a recent EE grad working as a test engineer. Any suggestions to test the adhesion of the silicone layer would be greatly appreciated by this new engineer!

Rolled silicon

Have you tried using or testing for the static charge to see if this is the cause of the problem and or the solution to the problem?

adhesion test

Consider doing a metered droplet test of the ink in question or suitable liquid onto the silicone. The size of the droplet footprint (or how much it beads) will be relative to the surface attraction of the ink, provide all other variable are controlled.
