Mobile Detection System for the Bird Flu

08/02/2006 11:00 AM

NanoDetection Technology, The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are teaming up to develop a mobile product that can detect avian influenza. The device will use NanoDetection Technology's patented biochip to detect light produced as a result of a chemical reaction (e.g., DNA hybridization or protein conjugation) in positive tests. According to the company's CEO, the test is "cowboy simple" and can be performed by farmers instead of Ph.D.s.

NanoDetection Technology's CEO

08/03/2006 8:04 AM

Looks like a worthwile project and an innovative product.

But it appears that NanoDetection Technology's CEO, Charlie Barnett needs some sensitivity training. Even if you don't need a Ph.D. to use it, phrases like "'cowboy simple'" and "readily used by farmers" seem to try to denigrate these users. They are NOT simpletons or stupid people, they just don't have degrees in biology or related disciplines. SHAME!!!!!!!

IM(ns)HO, an apology should be forthcoming from CEO Barnett.
