Reducing Electromagnetic radiation produced by feeder lines

05/18/2008 4:56 AM

The public concern over electromagnetic radiation from 50Hz power lines has led to an international accptance of 2mG as a maximum value for this type of radiation.

My question: If I spec for an armoured power cable buried 1.5 meters under the surface, grounded at both ends, will this aid in reducing the electromagnetic field? The cable is 150 meters long and the current is 630A at 400/230V.

This is a difficult one to answer precisely and might requires you to hire a qualified engineer to calculate the final value. One thing is certain, it will reduce the EM field compared to an areal installation at the same distance, but if my memory serves me well, the field intensity reduces at the cube of the distance. This means that adding meters between people and the source might be more effective than adding shielding.
