Wembley Stadium Arch Support.

Ok this is a thinly disguised celebration of Portsmouth winning the FA CUP (the oldest football [soccer] knock out competition in the world).

I was there... Brilliant!
What is the best sporting event you have attended?

LOL I was wondering how you'd get a thread started about Pompey winning LOL

I'm not a sports fan, but I've been to a few Grand Prixs at Silverstone. just up the road from me...

First off, Growing up in Southampton, I will just have to call you a 'SCUMMER' and get that off my chest! I can say without shadow of a doubt, the best sporting event I ever went to was when Sheffield Wednesday beat Pompey away many years ago! I've only ever been to two matches in my life! Saints and Pompey and the Owls and Pompey! But that was before the Owls went tumbling down a few divisions! Any idea where the Owls are now? Or even if they are classed as a professional team?

Up the Owls ('til the day they die!!)

Cheers Del. I see The Saints went down as well! It's all happening eh! And Pompey won the FA Cup! Swings and roundabouts eh!

Anyway, back to the Arch supports! Yes, very nice!

Hi Del,

We are having T-20 IPL Cricket in India it has become very popular with young Indians here. I have watched in Mumbai it is very interesting format and mostly where ever played in India stadiums are full of crowds. Also it has created good fellowship among most of the international players.

Regards,

Suresh Sharma.

Hi Del,

I am a lifelong Pompey supporter but have been living in Scotland for the past 30+ years, so support my local team (Dunfermline) also. No Big Time Charlie supporter of Rangers or Celtic!!

My son Neil and I flew down to see the match at Wembley on Saturday. Awesome stadium and atmosphere. Not a classic game of football game what a result!

Now since this IS an engineering blog and for those few readers who may not be interested in Pompey and football, I too will add my observations of the support arches. I noticed that the rain channels down onto the concrete support plinths and even after such a short space of time is scarring the plinth, there is no obvious channel for it to drain into.

We are having trouble with rusting of the SS support wires on the Forth Road Bridge up here after only 40 years so suspect that the carbon steel frame over Wembley will not last even that long! But having visited Wembley once, I am more than happy if it is never repeated, we had our day out at Wembley.

PUP. Europe here we come!

I had the opportunity of watching Pele play in the 70's. It wasn't his finest hour, but an amazing spectacle nonetheless.
