Back from Iraq and looking for work. What sites do you recommend?

05/18/2008 11:42 AM

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what job sites people recommend in the states? I've just got back to Michigan from 6 months in Iraq and I'm a bit freaked out about the recession. I'm looking at either moving to Texas later in the year or heading back out to Iraq, although I'd rather not for obvious reasons.

I've found constructioncrossing.com and there's all sorts of construction jobs on there, in fact I have a couple of interviews lined up in Houston as a result.

How do you find jobs? Do you use job sites? If so, which ones? If not how do you find work when there's a recession on its way?

Thanks in advance,

Zensunni

What is your skill set? Or what degree(s) do you hold?

Monster.com is a good one. For energy jobs, Think energy is also good, thinkenergygroup.com

A lot of the oilfield service companies and engineering contractors in Houston are looking for all sorts of help, so coming to Houston is not a bad idea. Try the help wanteds in the Houston Chronicle.

Until they learn to store electric energy, it will be a good career field.

After making a killing in Iraq, go straight to Abu Dhabi, you'll easily get US$90,000 tax free in the oil & gas industry. Now that's a killing!

Try Team Industrial Services Inc,

They do leak control, NDE, Heat treating and have a lot of work in the Port Arthur, Texas area as well as many other areas.

As strange as it may sound, don't forget craigslist. I have found more direct employment opportunities listed on craigslist than you will find with monster, careerbuilder or hotjobs which generally are clogged up with various employment agencies.

Good Luck

What kind of work are you looking for? If you could give some idea of what you want it would help. Houston and south Texas in general is great for trade skills such as welding, pipe fitting, rigging, mill wright and many other construction type jobs and I am sure for others as well. I have heard that a refinery in Port Aurthur Texas has a huge long term job in the works. I was thinking I heard Jacobs Engineering may have a part in it's design and management.

I've had fair luck with CareerBuilder.com but there are also a lot of fradulant responses that say that they have a wunnerful job but then demand your cell phone number to get a response. I don't know what that is all about but it can't be legit. Good luck with the search.

Bechtel and Jacobs are doing a joint venture to construct what amounts to a new refinery. They are doubling the size of the Motiva refinery.

Yep that is it, thanks for the info. Steve. I would think that anyone could make some good money from working this job through. The last one I worked in south Texas was the Formosa Refinery project near Port Olivia/Port Lavaca Texas. That was a very good job for me and my family that lasted several years. My NDT contractor is bidding on the NDT work for the Port Aurthur Job and they say it is going to be a huge one.

What recession? An actual recession would be based on economic indicators, not rediculous public opinion poles of un/misinformed people.

Yeah, I have been flying a bunch lately and you can usually tell that times a bad economically in that the only travelers are business travelers, and even business travel is down. But right now the planes are full of families with kids. Vacation flyers... Not much sign of a recession in the air...

Sorry to be off-topic...

I hear almost daily on the news some rediculous public opinion pole about the state of the economy usually in some terminology that indicates that the US is on the fast track to being a third world country. It is just sickening that people buy into this crap. The economy is the worst it has been in 20 years, yet it is the best time to buy or build a new home...there are no jobs available anywhere, yet unemployment is very low...who is buying this nonsense?!? This doom and gloom media is all being shoved down people's throats as a means to justify raising costs and padding beurocrat's wallets. The cost of being successful is to be forcefed lies about how miserable our situation is, especially by the Al Gore global waming cartel. Hey, let's all buy carbon credits and junk science creations as pennance to 'offset' all the damage we each cause to the planet everyday. If there was ever a money for nothing scheme...

I don't know about reality - it is such an ambiguous concept. However, the indicators are available for inspection here, and they seem a mixed bag. Interesting that CPI continues to rise, along with GDP, exports and imports. Both employment and unemployment are down (how does that work? did a lot of employees disappear?) M1 is down; M2 is up. I don't really know what any of it means. That is part of the ambiguity.

I know the reality of what I see. Cost of groceries is rising faster than any time in living memory. Energy costs are on a rocket ride. Truckers are protesting. Cost of everything at the store is more this year than it was last year. Many friends have been forced to retire (very) early or were simply fired. This includes both professional and blue color. Interest rates might be low, but so many good people no longer qualify to get a loan when needed.

I can't say what a politician or economist would call it, but it is not good.

BTW: More people are flying now because it costs less than driving, at least in the States. (That has been the case for me.)

One thing to keep in mind about the number of employees dropping, as well as unemployment, is that the baby boomer generation is beginning to retire. There will soon be far more jobs available then there are people to fill the positions. This will be a job seeker's market and hopefully wages will be very competitive. There will of course still be alot of imported labor on work visas, but this still will not be enough to fill in the gaps.

A security clearance, assuming you have one, is a very valuable commodity. Leverage it if you can at one of the clearance related job sites. There are many. In particular there is one at military.com. (Or you can just go to www.military.com web site and select "careers" on the upper menu bar, for many related options.)

You might consider looking at http://usajobs.opm.gov/ for a US government job. There are thousands litsted there, all over the world. Clearance is a plus.

Good luck to you.

One place to start to gather information and lead to sites for jobs is at usa.gov. It provides information for finding a job, veterans benefits -including employment (veterans get an advantage in government employment), link to state job banks, and guidance on job search, etc.

On that page one can select "Government Jobs" for listing and links to government employment at federal, state and local levels. .

There are several government agencies that advertise openings on their own web pages, but do not copy them to USAJOBS. Those jobs should appear in the Career One-Stop site. Otherwise at the top page of the main web site for each particular agency.

This ends your quick tutorial on finding information concerning civilian employment with the government in the USA.

Hope it helps.

This has been a great source for some. You can subscribe and receive daily updates on jobs in your area of interest within a prescribed distance (25 miles for example).
