Automatic Thread Check

05/21/2008 4:31 PM

Does anyone know of a supplier that makes automatic thread checking gages. I'm not looking for thread presence. I need an actual go / no go inspection. The thread in question is M14X 1.5

Hi,

I expect that you have to build this tool yourself.

We started something similar in 2003 but soon discovered that nothing suitable was existing.

And to measure all necessary quantities would have been very difficult.

So first step would be a definition: good-bad.

I can tell you how to build this: a screw with internal multiple sensors.

A robot or specialised machine has to screw it in and out, take the measurements, compare to allowed values and accept or reject and may be to archieve and naturally feed back to production department.

Physical automatic checking of GO may be possible. But no go will be really difficult, if not impossible, as I foresee.

You may think of projecting the threads to be measured on an image sensor and compare that automatically with preset images of GO and NO GO.

This should be possible.

Check out SMAC.

They mfg. Linear with Rotary Actuators that are perfect for Automation of this type of appliciaton.

They typically have some video clips on the website showing all the capabilities.
It appears that the video is malfunctioning @ the moment.

We have many of these in place and the work very well.

It is much simpler than trying to make your own desgn up as it is an integrated system(Linear & Rotary motion all in one package)

Here in the US, New Vista Corporation does a spectacular thread verification job, with both Go as well as No-Go checking.

I hope this helps.
