Load Testing

05/21/2008 4:53 PM

When overhead crane rails are replaced is a load test required, my understanding is that it is not required because the actual crane ends at the wheels and the rail is part of the facility rather than the crane. much like wire rope, although the rails threshold is sigificantly less than the wire rope.

Hello Shane

You have not advised the location of this crane.

Generally, Laws and Statutes vary according to jurisdictional areas = Country and/or State/Province.

In general you are correct in saying <"....the actual crane ends at the wheels and the rail is part of the facility rather than the crane....">

However, it is prudent to ensure that the crane and rails are tested as an assembly, after the rails replacement, after all, a bolt may be not fully tightened, the rail/s may be improperly joined, or other fault may exist.

That way, the proper Engineering Inspection Certification may be obtained in writing, and if there are later problems, there would not be direct problems between the owner/s of the crane/rails, and any insurance claim, as all reasonable test/inspections had been carried out.

The small additional cost of the complete test at the time, is well worth paying, to prevent later litigation.

It is important to have a proper Engineering Certificate in writing, made out by a properly qualified independent Inspector/Engineer, that way you have proper cover.

Kind Regards....

Hi Shane,

Load testing of the crane will only be required in a situation that the rails were not installed in line with an approved procedure.

Best regards,

Hi Shane,

I dont think it is manadtory to test the crane with overload. But you must ensure that rails are properly fixed/welded on the gantry girders. Also they are properly aligned. It will be better to take one trial run for full length of the Long Travel with Crane loaded with SWL to check alignment etc.

Regards,

Suresh Sharma.
