Art That Interprets You

08/07/2006 10:00 AM

Researchers from the University of Bath and Boston University have developed an interactive digital imaging system that reads the mood of the viewer and changes its image based on this reading. The "art" uses specialized software that reads eight key facial features to interpret its viewer mental state. Colors and style are then altered to suit the viewers mood. Apparently, this is done in real time, so the image will continue to change as the viewer watches.

That's pretty cool, but is it art?

No, that's not art.

That machine is more like a design, or an attempt at applied art. Although no one can really define what art is, true art, especially fine art, is from human to human and therein lies the beauty.

There's software reading facial features? That would explain a lot about my computers performance some days.

I'm still waiting...for the Art Bell gag.
