Sprint Nextel WiMax

08/09/2006 11:35 AM

Today Sprint Nextel announced plans to develop WiMax, described as Wifi with exceptionally greater range. I've lived in the country for years... cable doesn't reach me and forget about DSL. I have good cell reception though. Does anyone know the range limitations of the WiMax System?

http://www.wimax.com/education/faq/faq31 According to this it looks like the practical range is about 4-5 miles.

The 4-5 mile thing is a conservative safe bet but it depends heavily upon the frequency being used, line of site clarity, and uplink/downlink transmission systems (antennae, connectors, coax, etc.) The line of site thing tends to be the biggest issue, especially with mobile stations. With a fixed station you can customize your transmision system a lot more, too, with lower loss coax and a directional antennae. Good luck! Steve

CABLE/DSL

Hi, I'm in the same boat, only dialup in my area. but I got my eyes on 2way satelite. It's 55 bucks/month + hardware (modem and dish 500 bucks). But I don't know how good it yet, I'll let you know as soon as I find out. Jens

I had directway two way satt. service for about a year and it was great for a while. After about 6 months or so it slowed way down. It is not a good idea if you need a VPN. The transmit/receive delay from space is the problem.
