removing acrylic

05/23/2008 8:56 PM

hi everyone,

does anyone know the best way to remove a metal ring with stones from a hard clear acrylic cube that is approximately 3" x 3". is there a way to remove the acrylic without damaging the ring.

thank you all in advance

A sledge hammer may be better than a pic(k) .

Old joke How do you confuse an Irish labourer (substitute nationality of your choice)..
Show him a row of shovels and say 'take your pick'

(For non UK folk 'pick' as in 'pick axe' ..like a mattock? ...oh forget it...)

Try acetone and/or acetic acid on a scrap of acrylic. It it breaks up the acrylic then use a table saw to cut away as much excess acrylic as possible and soak remaining mass in a jar of the best solvent.

Methylene chloride, (dichloromethane) the active ingredient in paint thinner does not harm metal or stone and will penetrate and soften the acrylic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_stripper

I suggest you get a liter of it and immerse the acrylic in it overnight/ use a glass jar and use a lid with no rubber seal as it attacks all organics and makes them melt away

paint stripper costs more and contains less CH2Cl2.

do it outside, get none on the skin. It ruins rubber gloves.

when finished remove the ring from the softened

acrylic and rinse in CH2Cl2 and dry in a warm place. clean with a toothbrush and dish detergent, rinse..dry.

hi

are you saying to soak it in paint thinner overnight and then rinse in ch2ci2.

also what is ch2ci2?

also do you think acetone would work better than paint thinner?

thank you all very much

Re: removing acrylic

the pure active ingredient of paint thinner is methylene di chloride.

methan is CH4 Carbon plus 4 Hydrogen,'if you replace two hydrogen with chlorine you get

C Carbon

H2 2 hydrogen

Cl2 2 chlorine

paint thinner has added gellling agents to make it stick on the wall. It also has waxes to act as a skinning agent to reduce evaporation of the CH2Cl2 active ingredient. with a 3 inch cube and a glass jar big enough you can use enough to cover it, then cover the jar loosely.

Acetone is a flammable solvent. It is not as good as CH2Cl2, but it is cheaper.

Both are harmful to your person in that they will leach the fats from your skin. Both will also penetrate the skin and kill surface cells in thin areas, so keep the off you and it hurts when they do that.

A home depot will have a can of either

I have used loctite glue remover in the past and it does work very well but it takes time. It claims it works on all cyanide and acrylic based glues so you could give it a try.

I do not know if or how it would affect the stones, you always need to test as some stones are porous and could discolour.

Use Aurizon's method:

1) Cut or grind away excess acrylic.

2) Soak the still encased ring in methylene chloride.

3) Wash ring in soap and water then rinse thoroughly.

Safety precautions:

1) Wear EYE GLASSES/GOGGLES and rubber gloves, and, use a tongs or pliers to place and retrieve the ring.

2) Do it outside away from others and any flames or sparks.

3) Methylene chloride should be treated as hazardous waste and NOT dumped on the lawn or into a municipal sewer.

Good luck

Burn baby burn.

All the ingredients/parts of the object should have a higher melting point than acrylic. Much higher. If you have a company nearby that does laser cutting, they could do it in their lunch break. Hope this helps and doesn't delay your engagement. Ky

"Hope this helps and doesn't delay your engagement."

Every time I've seen a ring embedded this way, it was after the divorce, or once, after a broken engagement. The Court may order the ring returned - but usually they don't say that it can't be inside something else!

Recycling and re-circling a ring. What comes around goes around so that some one can be inside the other. It does ring a bell or should that be bells? Ky.

Chloroform will dissolve Acrylic, just cut the excess material off to avoid using to much Chloroform . put your item in a well sealed jar and let it soak until it becomes a gluggy mess then put the item in some fresh Chloroform to clean it up.

Dichloro ethylene or methylene is similar, if not the same, as metering roller cleaner as used in the printing industry. It is sometimes called "hard ink remover" as well.

As always use with caution and this is the reason why civilians or diy'ers cannot buy it normally.

Try a local print shop for a small quantity as you don't really want it in the house. Don't smoke, eat or drink and wear suitable protection against skin contact. This stuff goes through skin as if it is not there and binds with organic material.
