More and more cities and towns around the country are installing wireless "hot spots" in their municipalities, but the telecom and cable industries are fighting this trend and are lobbying hard for states to pass laws not allowing individual towns to set up their own systems.
In the words of Mayor Glen Sangiovani of St. Cloud, Florida, "We look at this as another utility, just like water, sewer, parks and recreation, that our communities should have."
I, for one, COMPLETELY agree with him.
Especially when, as the article concludes, "...Spokane, Washington, found they could easily set up wireless service when they upgrade their emergency communications networks with a little help from the Homeland Security Department. The federal department awarded $925 million last year for communications upgrades."
What does everyone out there think?
