Hybrid Transmissions for Hybrid Cars

08/11/2006 12:00 PM

General Motors, BMW, and DaimlerChrysler plan to invest over $1 billion to develop a hybrid transmission and related systems. Currently, the automakers have about 500 enginees who have been working for the past 18 months on the development of a next-generation hybrid engine. According to Andreas Truckenbrodt, executive Director of DaimlerChyrsler's hybrid programs, "It's truly amazing what you can get if you bring wild, dedicated engineers together." Just Spin

08/12/2006 3:41 PM

This blows me away. The arrogance is pretty incredible. They claim that they will leapfrog Toyota's technology, as if Toyota is simply sitting on their hands. These particular manufactures are clearly playing catch up -- no amount of spin will change that fact.

Granted this quote might have been taken out of context:

"What's often forgotten about the hybrid technology is that you have to put it into the car," Truckenbrodt told reporters. Any of the 500 engineers forgetting that should be fired immediately!

Hybrid Cars.

08/15/2006 6:37 AM

Hybrid cars are the worst of both worlds because they are not a pure technology. You have to move more weight around than either a plain oilburner or a purely electric vehicle. When running on gas (petrol) you still have to move the weight of the electrics (Motor Batteries etc). When you are running on the electric motor you have to move the petrol engine fuel etc. So you lose which ever way. The big disadvantage of an electric vehicle is that the weight of fuel does not go down as you progress along your route. At least with a liquid fueled vehicle you do get lighter as you burn the fuel. Batteries take up a lot more space than their liquid fuel equivilent plus you cannot as yet just fill up a battery as you can with gas. If a quick swop system were a new fully charged battery pack could for a fee be exchanged on the foreourt and if enough miles per pound of weight were available then maybe a practical electric car might be made. You would buy the car but lease the power pack. Pay per charge as if buying gas. This might work in towns and cities, but out in the wilderness solar power or fuel cell technology might one day be a possibility. For now greener biodiesel powered cars, and trucks are a way forward. I think in the end micro nuclear reactors will be developed and if run on new types of fuel this will be the long term solution. But just driving fewer miles for now will save fuel and reduce polution as well.
