Pc shut dowm just before loading desktop

This pc stays on during the installation of windows xp home or even with xp pro everthing looks ok until it is time to boot up to the desktop then shuts down, not reboot, I have to press the on button to get it started again.I have tried many different combonations of memory.many different harddrives. mother board asus p5p800-mx.CPU celeron 2.5. any input will help. (I am about to try win ME or Win 98)

Can you use F8 when booting to get into Safe Mode?

Please follow advice from JohnDG above.

My immediate thought is that the Power Supply is not sufficient to correctly run the PC.

I have noted that many PC's have poor quality Power Supplies, which partly fail and prevent a full boot-up of the PC.

The PC Maker or assembler saves around US$30 by using a marginal Power Supply.

If you give a listing of the equipment inside the PC, it is easy to work out the correct size of Power Supply.

Best to steer clear of WinMe or Win98, as they are now not supported by Microsoft, many present applications will not work with them now, and they were not really very good Operating systems, anyway - OK at the time, but WinXP Pro is the best Windows O/S to date).

Your problem may normally be resolved quite quickly, without your resorting to using those old Operating System/s.

For sure it shuts down?

This may be a stretch, but do you have a display port in a PCI slot for a video card upgrade, and if so, check you display settings. I tried to upgrade a video card and gave up on it for a year until I finally tried again and found the display settings needing to be changed was all the trouble I had. Same symptom to a degree--windows starts up(normal monitor activity that you can see) and as soon as the desktop should appear it goes to no signal(at this point it has shifted to the other display). Might be a long shot--but I was pretty disappointed at how simple it was.

Is this a build or a simple installation procedure? What Intel chipset? How many hard drives?

check the caps on the board you may find you have a blown cap other options are a IRQ conflict pull all extra cards and boot bear board if it boots put all cards back in 1 at a time

some older video cards can blow and cause this as well.

If you have installed more than one hard drive windows maybe confused not finding "C"

This is more a build form but maybe helpful as trouble shooter also...
