Freeze-Dried Blood

08/14/2006 11:44 AM

Looks like more advances in medical treatment for wounded soldiers. The new concept is freeze-dried blood. Currently they use a water/saline solution, but in the future soldiers may carry little pouches of their own blood that to be used in emergencies.

You would think the cells would die

The story says that enough of the cells survive to make a difference. That's amazing. Freeze dried blood could help in cases of emergencies, it wouldn't have to be just for the military. Personally I'm O+ so I don't have to worry much, but it could really benefit O-, A-, or B- recipients.

Not so bad. It is powdered blood, 10% of the actual volume, and you mix water and inject on need. Assuming that 70kg man has 7kg blood, so it will be 700g to refill you completely. Does that sound bad? Red blood cells do not have nucleaus or gene and these cells are your oxygen carriers. You can't generate any energy without them. They can be dried at low temperature under centrufuge technology without breaking the cell membrane which is naturally made of lipids. It is a great technology to have dried blood, and this technology is not available to the people of the world. You should be proud of your government doing it to give back your life in the warfield. It is not a joke but a real life coming back in that 700g powder. It is safer.
