What is the Concrete Cube test relationship to Concrete Core test

06/04/2008 1:09 PM

Hi ,

I was wondering if there is a direct relationship between Concrete Cube(compressive strength) test relationship to Concrete Core(compressive strength) test result? I'm asking this question as I cant find a direct standard in BS , EN or IS that links them.

If a concrete is spec. at 40N/mm^2 ( cube test at 28days) , what would the pass fail result from core results have to be?etc?

I appreciate any replys to this , that may point in the right direction.

Thanks

I would have thought that there is two aspects to your relationship.

1 is the strength / area ie 40N/mm^2 if the area of the core is the same the strength would be the same if you were testing after the same time i.e. 28 days.

If you are testing at a different time then the strength would be different i.e. the strength is increasing over time and it is not linear.

hope this is some help, Regards

There is an ASTM test for cubes and one for cylinders. I think the cubes give a higher result for the same strength of concrete. The easiest way to find out is to call a testing labratory and ask them.

Usually concrete cores are obtained by drilling a core from a finished concrete element. If that is what you mean, I don't know the answer to your question. If you want to compare cube strength to cylinder strength, there is a table at this site.

Bruce has got it right. Of course, if you still have doubt, call a testing labratory.

I would check with the Federal Highway Commision. They will have all the information handy because of the number of bridges and roadways they oversee.
