How Much Hydro Power?

06/05/2008 7:16 PM

Realistically, how much elec. power could one expect, with a full gravity flow of water

in a 12 inch dia. pipe with a 21 foot head using a pellting wheel with a enclosed housing.

Nice reply but how do I go about finding that specific reply among the hundred others posted the same day and in what topic forum. A hot link or better yet, detailed directions would be appreciated.

Hello! I ask for directions to find your posted comment and you answer with this! Where is the post you originally wrote? Which forum? I did not see it.

From experience about 75 to 100hp if the pipe is full, if the pipe isn't full you probably can't run.

There are less expensive alternative's to a Pelton wheel, such as a canal irrigation pump run backwards, but make sure you engineer the pump thrust bearing housing for reverse thrust during shutdown. A Pelton wheel can regulate to low flows.

If you are an isolated generator, you will probably want a set of back-up batteries connected to the generator output, depending upon how much the flow changes other heat storage methods, etc may be of interest.

Thank you for the information. We currently run 55 and 75 KW diesel generators and I am looking for some alternative in view of the escalating fuel costs.

Thanks to all for the help.
