Welcome friend.

There are a few questions that I hope do not seem strange.

What type of bricks do you want to make?

:- Air dried adobe/mud bricks

:- Dry pressed and wood kiln fired

:- Wet pressed and gas/oil fired

The equipment required for each type is very different.

Local "eco-friendly" people hand make adobe and there is also a local dry pressed brick producer. (Obviously I'm in Australia) The dry pressed manufacturer would allow me to take pictures of his equiipment and get details to you, but that would not be suitable for adobe.

If you're after the "modern" bricks (with weight reducing core holes through them) then you need to follow the "wet" process. That is HUGE investment cost.

Whatever path you follow, the key is in the preparation work. Pulverising the ingredients and getting them uniformly mixed.

The first item that I would get would be equipment to prepare your ingredients mechanically and divert your people from mixing to casting. (That way everyone is still dealing with methods they understand.) I imagine something like a large cement mixer batching up to 5 cubic meters in a batch. (That's around enough for 2500 bricks)

:- Diesel powered truck with "agitator" mounted on the back.

or :- A small wet concrete batching plant. (Inverted "A" shaped bin with mixing augers in the bottom, just add the ingredients while the augers are running and it merrily mixes them until you turn it off.)

Semi automatic filling of moulds would then be the next step. (Put your mix into an overhead hopper with a fixed stroke vertical plunger "dosing" one brick volume into your current moulds. Operator uses foot pedal or other device to trigger the cylinder and it operates through a single cycle.

The move to "baked" bricks would be a significant change for all personnel involved. If you are wanting to take that step, then your local experts would need to attend another brickworks and "learn the ropes".

Book learning is great, but there's nothing like the practical aspects in that sort of industry.

I like your answer -- I've been wondering about the same equipment, and if it might be used with a papercrete-type material and/or a biomass-based epoxy material -- I'm thinking, in particular, what would require the least skill on the part of the operators. A hang-up i've had trouble getting around is that it seems to take a lot of expensive, cranky equipment to apply things like sprayfoam insulation, or making Structural Insulated Panels, or the like -- the other thing is to find out what sort of raw materials are available to use in this brick-making process -- I'm working with some people to devise a 100% biomass-derived epoxy [from stuff that wouldn't normally be used for feedstock, hopefully], but I also saw the thread about reusing phone books as building blocks, which led to papercrete -- From what I understand, waste paper is not exactly overflowing in Kenya and Africa in general -- If you would still care to send it, I'd be interested in the info on your local pressed brick mfg.

Your answer is filled with loads of great advice, for someone hanging upside down!

There are a number of manufacturers of machines for making "Compressed Earth Block", similar to but stronger than adobe, requiring no firing. Available in a variety of sizes and configurations, diesel powered. Google "Compressed Earth Blocks".

Also known as 'Soil-cement' blocks, and undoubtedly by other names as well
