OK. What are the other fluid options?

Come on. Think about it. The purpose of a pressure test is to prove the integrity of the line. So what happens if it leaks during the test?

If it contains water, then not a lot, as water will be drained away into some sort of watercourse or it will soak away into the ground. Not a lot of damage or environmental consequences.

If it contains diesel and it leaks, then there is considerable threat to groundwater resources, which humans drink, and to nearby ecosystems.

Liquids under pressure contain little energy. A test of this sort is usually carried out using a hand-pump.

Compressed air isn't a good choice. At 6 barg, the line contains ≈100 times as much energy needed to begin deformation of the steel in a toe-cap safety boot, for comaprison. Imagine the consequences if it were flinging a broken piece of 11/2" pipe towards an unsuspecting human being at high speed.....

So which is the best fluid to use, from the above options? The right answer will score CR4 'Good Answer' points!

You can use water. But importan is after hydro test you should dry-up to line.

If pipe line is so long. You should test with air first.( 2barg or 3barg) than after if it isnt there any leak ( if there is any leak you can find it easly from air blowing noise ), you can test with water ( 1,5 x design pressure)

Here is an example of what happens when one tests a pipe using compressed air.
