Calculating Bore Path in Horizontal Drilling

06/10/2008 2:27 AM

Dear All,

There are so many softwares to calculate bore path for HDD works ex. Boreaid, Drillsmart, etc., But, I just want to know how to calculate the same manually.

If anyone can tell me? i will understand and apply those calculation in Excel spreadsheet for my convenience.

Thanks & Regards

it is just geometry, calculate the CL length from the point of entry at the entry angle to a point where the next curve occurs, then calculate the next curve starting from the xyz from the last, etc.. until you reach the exit point for the borehole. It is like calculating the CL for a road with a vertical curve (with some considerations discussed below). This is reasonably simple geometric calculation, but you may want a civil engineer to do this task. There are some assumptions you must make regarding entry and exit angles, minimum depth under structures, stratigraphy, etc.. However, these assumptions are limited by the requirements for land availability, waste disposal, equipment operation, bore hole intregrity, etc..

The "Atlas Bore Planner" from Vermeer is so complete and so inexpensive, that you can't get a payback on your investment (5 hours of your time) by even creating a simple excel worksheet. Ask your local dealer.

I'm serious. I taught directional drilling for them in 18 different countries, no longer work for them...but I seriously believe that I am giving you the right advice.

Atlas bore planner and drillsmart are more of a drawing utility. They just allow you to draw a bore plan which is good if that is your goal. As mentioned above, there are more factors to consider then just the plan.

Check out BoreAid - bore plans can be constructed with ease, are very precise, and
can be exported.
