Membranes?

Hypochlorite is often produced electrolytically from salt water, and normally membranes are not needed for this.

Have a look at Wallace & Tiernan's website (usual disclaimer).

Thank you very much for your reply. As far as I know electrically manufacturing hypochlorite with mercury methot do not need any membrane but this method is now unable to use because of enviromentally problems. Direct elecroliss method need a membrane to seperate salt water and NaOH solution and Cl2

best wishes

There seems to be confusion between sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide manufacture.

Mercury is used in the Castner-Kellner process, in which a membrane is needed to separate the sodium hydroxide from sodium chloride. The technique is (or has been) used for many decades.

Neither mercury nor membranes are used in electrochlorination, which is a method of producing sodium hypochlorite from sodium chloride at point-of-use, and widely used in bulk potable water manufacture.

Sorry if I express what I am asking wrong. I have used chlorination from salt water in swimming pools many time. What I am asking is the production of sodium hypochloride as bleach raw material. %12 - 14 available chlorine. Sodium hydroxide also producing as a side material. There we need two method one is mercury method other is membrane method which is what is popular now. What I am looking for a membrane that I can use in this process. Thank you very much for the replies. It is very nice to see people trying to help and share their knowladge here.

No membranes are required to produce sodium hypochlorite from salt (NaCl) and water. Application of DC current to a simple grid submerged in the solution will result in the product. If you are using seawater, which contains several other cations, you may need a membrane system to preclude the contamination.
