Caustic Tanks

06/11/2008 8:02 AM

Good day all

I work in a facility that deals with plenty of chemicals,

but i noticed some thing odd regarding the caustic storage tank as it was the only tank that doesn't have eye sight glass attached to it...

I keep asking why but no answer..

is any one have any idea if we need to attach eye sight glass to a caustic tank

what the best way to do that....

thank you

Strong caustic liquors are generally opaque, and as the level drops, the inside of the hypothetical sight glass will become coated with dried caustic soda crystals. Looking through the glass will not be possible in these circumstances.

It's not fitted, because it would be as 'useful as a chocolate teapot'.

Depending on the material the tank is made out of, a light may be used at the top of the tank allowing the material level to be seem through the tank. In my industry that is what is used for caustic and acid storage.

Generally the sight glass becomes opaque with caustic soda water and hence level not visible.

so it is not used

I still believe a chocolate teapot can be useful if they realise what's it made of prior to using it as a pot more so than the visual sight-glass on the tank.

why do you need asight glass? you need to know the level in the tank so you can install alevel indicator you can have alow level which can start feeding and hight level to stop the feeding

Using an external level indicator (mechanical, or a weight indicator or other on the tank ) would likely be easiest.

Not only will the sodium hydroxide precipitate out on the glass, but it would tend to etch also, making hard to see through and eventually weakening the glass.

Dear Sir,

I really appreciate your pin pointed question.

The storage place where the hazardous chemicals are kept, should invariably be visited with adequate protective gear.

Caustic tanks with caustic lye inside is a very very dangerous and hazardous chemical.

One should not take any chances , but safely put on a protective gear for the human eye. As it costs nothing as compared to the price of loosing ones eye sight.

In fact why we should play with the hazardous chemical and why we should visit such dangerous site without wearing the requisite protective gear?

First we should ask our conscious as to whether I am endangering the limb to any risk, and then proceed to visit the hazardous chemical site.

Regards,

Ulhas Pradhan
