Further, tell us more about the "adhesive" side of your question. What are you trying to stick together? How much strength is needed? Cure method? Cure time? Working time? What are the environmental conditions to which the adhesive will be exposed?

Sorry for the poor detailing. It would be electricity. This is what I'm thinking: A dispenser (i.e., plastic film, paper, net, etc) that will only work when the RIGHT roll used in that dispenser is recognizable by the dispenser. It would not accept any other fake rolls from another source.

I am thinking that a conductive (electric) device inside the core of the REAL roll will enable the dispenser to work by closing the circuit. A fake roll without the conductive device will not activate the dispenser mechanism thus a fake or imitation roll would not work in the dispenser.

Does this help?

I think it's a waste of time...

If you can get the conductive roll made then so can someone else..

This is doublethink...The way to win customers and maintain them is to provide good reliable product and service. To add complexity for the sake of it is generally counter productive...if they can get cheaper consumables which work fine you must be overcharging!

All you will do is antagonise and alienate customers.... you are just making the roll more expensive by adding the feature...thus it becomes a self fullfilling prophecy. People won't want the product because the rolls are expensive and not interchangeable.

Just my opinion...

I agreed but,

What I am really try to prevent is for other competing distributors loading/pirating our dispensers with their product and not ours.

Quality and service is not an issue here, but cost it is.

Thanks

It might be less expensive to add a RFID device in the roll (near the core) and have the transponder attached to the dispenser.

Another way would be to use a special paint inside the core that is detected by the dispenser.

What about simply embedding a few magnets at the right position in the core? they could be placed to produce a magnetic code when rotating. Magnets and magnetic detectors are inexpensive and reliable.

You could also use a simple metal proximity switch and ass metal pieced in the core.

I would avoid tampering with your adhesive recipe as it could cause quality issues with your product down the road.

Every technique can be copied but if you conceal them properly it will slow down the imitations. The more money you add to the roll, the harder it will be to copy it. It is just a question of budget.

These are good ideas other means than resistivity may be applicable.

The roll core may be made using conductive plastic or have embedded metallic component detected by inductive or capacitive coupling.

Capacitive sensor electronics have evolved quite a lot in recent years and are really quite cheap.

Also perhaps you could use a copyrighted optical pattern detected.

Maybe..

How cheap is 'cheap'? $$ sq in? How thick an adhesive? What form..pressure sensitive film, liquid, etc? How much volume in $$? The more you buy, the cheaper it is....How conductive do you need it to be? Finally, what will it be "sticking on", e.g. vinyl, polypropylene, epoxy plastic, etc....how strong must the bond be? All these issues will influence the cost..
