Wanted : Name of Double Acting Mechanism

06/12/2008 7:55 AM

Hi folks,

Does anyone know the name of the mechanism used on some printers/copiers that expands both paper guides when you pull/push either of the guides. I reckon it's just two sets of rack teeth on opposite sides of the same spur gear, but I can't get to the mechanism without breaking my printer. I have also seen small gift boxes, with drawers on either end - When you open one drawer, the other drawer opens simultaneously. Is this the same mechanism ? Does anyone know the name of the mechanism ?

Cheers, DE

Hey...know what you mean..you described it fine...but you want a name??? hmmm a push-me-pull-you?

The mechanism is doubtless as you described it...not broken your printer yet? And you call yourself an engineer?

(go into the office next door and break theirs...Kriss made me say that)

What, do you mean the tractor feed or pin feed sprockets??

Or are you after the name of the scissor type mechanics that mean you pull one side and both sides move??

No, not tractor/pin feed.

Sciccor mechanism would be suitable, but would take up lots of space.

On Rolling Mill Side Guides that are used to center the billet, they use a Rack Gear on both side guides and a Pinion Gear between them. As Hydraulic Cylinders push or pull the Side Guides the Rack Gears running against opposite sides of the Pinion Gear between them assure synchronized movement and keep the billet in the center of the Mill.

I have several of those on dies. Two racks with idle spur gears between them. They are used to center the part in the die. How about centering device because thats all I've ever heard them called from the manufacture.

Sounds like a variation on the "rack & pinion" theme.

So do I...They always seem to have some "new" tools coming along. I've bought from them a few times and they have quality stuff at a very decent price (at least when compared to the regular hardware store)
