There are a number of hurdles to overcome, including getting the interview. The document that does this is the CV/Resumé. It is a marketing tool designed to put the candidate somewhere in the top six (say) from the hundreds that applied for it. So having a good CV/Resumé, well distributed to targetted organisations is the first hurdle.

At interview, remember that it is the employer that has the problem. It's such a big problem that the only way the problem will go away is to hire someone. Something on the application tells them that the candidate at interview may just have the solution to the problem on-board. So find out what the problem is, and sell them the solution to it.

hmm just adding onto that, having a neat and easy to read CV will clear the first hurdle as to landing yourself a job interview. and good grades does help for the first job too....(especially aiming for the bigger companies)

in any case, whereabouts are you in? (or intend to work in)

well technically, positions are always around, the only problem being, companies are only willing to spend the minimum sum for the best workers and very often, they pay peanuts to engineers from certain countries, and uk isnt one of them.
