MCSE A+ with Networking

06/14/2008 8:56 PM

Greetings, one and all,

My name is Ari, my handle is Orpheuse and I'm 50 years old. I find myself in the peculiar position of requiring an MCSE. I'm not the brightest bulb in the box but I did manage a technical degree in programming in 1984.

Which online program would you, my learned friends, recommend as the easiest (as in most comprehensible) and fastest route to this end?

Thank you,

/Ari (Orpheuse)

Uhm, what's an MCSE?

I realize that, if I had to ask, I might not be able to help but just in case.

Ah yes, I remember one of my friends mentioning it. Unfortunately, I didn't get much information. All I know is that you can get certified for different OS, like Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.

The exams are different for each so I guess, you'd have to know which one is required first of all. Next, the exams deal with things like network security, network structure or architecture, network administration, MS SQL, and a host of other things.

As I said, I haven't much information. The Microsoft website might have more and better info.

Good luck.

You asked for online:

http://www.mcse-training.com/

You might learn better traditionally:

http://www.cedsolutions.com/mcse-boot-camp/mcse-boot-camp-florida.cfm

Good luck!

Dear RDAVIS,

When did you graduate Colorado Tech? What books did you use? Which books did you find usefull and explained complex structure in a comprehensible manner?

Thanks,

Another idea is to check and see what Amazon.com has for books. Sometimes there are practice tests & such. Border's, Barnes & Noble might be helpful as well. There you can go in browse and see -- before you decide to buy.

I went with http://www.testout.com/. Relatively inexpensive, self paced, and included a bunch of other courses that you need. But if you are in a time crunch, then the "boot camps" as mentioned above are probably best. But it will cost.

If you decide to go in persone to a course the MCSE boot camps have been a great help to many of my techs over the years. They are brutal, pretty spendy, and mentally draining but literally after 6 days the success rate of passing the tests was pretty high (of course these guys were already techs to begin with). I've found there are two different classes. To learn the subject and understand it, or to pass the test. It really depends which your looking for. I can speak from experience though. The MCSE might get you the interview but hiring many techs over my career i've never seen it get somebody the job.

Thanks, but I'm terribly agoraphobic. That's why I'm looking on line. I'm using the Win 2003 server self-paced training kit.
