Arc welding

06/16/2008 9:50 AM

I did saw some practice in arc welding which is .when they start welding for example car or any engine that started by electric motor starter they run the engine and they says to protect the engine battery and all electronics parts inside while running. Is that practice correct?

NO!

The electronics are in no way protected by operating!

That is also a recipe for an explosion!

The proper way is to disconnect all the electronics, evacuate and clean any fuels and oils, grind and clean the area to be welded.....

The only thing they are accomplishing by being too lazy, is to ensure the customer has to come back for more repairs, and endangering everyone in the area!!

Because the negative return to a car battery is the frame of the vehicle a problem can arise when welding to the frame of stray voltages being imposed on the electrical system via the positive wiring back through the battery to the negative frame connection with the obvious possibility of damage to electrical components. The battery ground connection should be removed to avoid this problem also the work lead should be connected very solidly as close as possible to the area being welded. Running the engine will not protect anything it will probably tend to cause more damage as more components will be connected to the vehicle ground return.
