Cutting a disc from moving Non woven web

06/17/2008 1:43 AM

Hi,

I work for a nonwovens manufacturing industry. We manufacture non woven web using needle punch method.

The web runs on a conveyor & proceeds to a spray booth. To check the GSM(grams per sq. m) of the web, method being followed is

- manually cut a disc,by placing a glass slab whose dimensions are known.

- measure the weight of the cut disc

- This is done using a glass slab of known dimensions.

This measurement is done after needle punching, before the web reaches spray booth. The operator has to place the slab on the web and cut the disc, moving with the conveyor. Moreover, since this involves manual cutting the disc in hand, variation is seen.

Im looking for a mechanised method to cut out a peice from the moving web.Can anyone help me on this .

Hi raghava,

What is your line speed?

How often do you need sampling?

Is there something about manually sampling that is unsatisfactory? I have thought about doing that at my plant (converting/coating/laminating), but have found that it is unfeasible.

Please answer the questions above for more directed answer.

Best Regards,

Mike

HI Mike,

- we run the line @ 4 - 5 m/min

- Sampling is to be done during set up & at the end of each web

- Manually placing a slab & pulling the fibers is not giving consistent weights.

Thanks

Raghav

Consider putting a cutting die of the right shape on a roller, similar to what is used in the printing industry to cut shapes out. Another option is to put in an automatic punch which will very quickly make the punch out. It can be mounted such that it moves at the same speed as the web while it is doing the punching. Or have the operator cut a little large a piece, and then trim it later to the right size.

We run a non woven line as well to produce carpet backing with a 2500 mm card .This machine has a gauge call Servo X before fiber enters our card it takes a density reading after it clears our finish loom the backing is scanned again . So you set your cap weight up and it will keep that same weight . We still take samples every so often to double check .
