Turbine expansion problem

When we assemble the turbine the total axial float was 5.0 mm and all the radial and axial clearances were as per our site protocol.In this condition when rolled the turbine and synchronised there was no problem in expansion.The total shell expansion was 12 mm which was good as per designer but when the turbine tripped the turbine came to halt and significant vibration was observed in Front bearing.Till now we are not able to rotate the turbine even by manually also.

Please suggest.

Were the diaphragms pulled out during the outage? Sounds like a diaphragm might have broken loose and jammed the machine.

The other possiblity is that you threw some blades and they jammed up between diaphragms and seized the machine..

If the axial floats and shell expansions were all ok and the machine was running ok, and now the machine wont even turn over, something serious happened.

One way or another I would suggest that you will have to pull the lid and have a look.

I am with you Steve S. If it is jammed there is no choice but to lift the lid and check. It may well be worth lifting the bearing cap first if that was giving some indication of problems. It is a cheap option that will have to happen so it might as well be first and pray that that is all it is. One wiped bearing.

Was there much noise when the turbine tripped?

After tripping again we have checked the axial float and it is 4.8 mm till now.Is there any possibility to pull or push the turbine casing by Main steam pipe line if there is some parallelity disturbance between casing flange and MS pipe flange?Though the casing locking clearance axial and radial both was within 0.05 to 0.08 mm then why the casing centring again and again being disturbed?

Not sure I understood the question, but it is possible for steam piping to push the case around, assuming that either the growth of the steam piping is not being properly restrained and controlled, or the turbine case is not properly pinned or guided.

One of the first easy things you can check is to make sure the slides and guides under the turbine case are free and allowing movement and not jammed up, they also go back to the piping drawings and make sure that spring can settings are correct on the steam piping, and if there are any slides or guides supporting the steam piping that they are free and not jammed.

Hi first question would be when you powered up the turbine and came through the critical vibration stages did your terchnicians notice anything unusual?

Have the emergency lubrication pumps and lines been checked for integrity? are these working and is there lubrication oil in the system. Have seen it done that technicians forget the most important part of the process.

what were the temperature devices measuring at the time of your trip? along the generator? did they notice anything unusual? how long after synchronisation did the unit seize up and trip?
